About the Lodge
Middle Fork Lodge is the perfect blend of adventure and luxury. The current owner has completely rebuilt and refurbished the Lodge. It has reopened as an exclusive retreat for the discriminating traveler. Middle Fork Lodge has hosted two former US Presidents and many celebrities such as Bill Cosby, John Denver, and Loretta Lynn. The surrounding area comprises approximately 2,500 square miles and is known as the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. The Lodge is still largely inaccessible, except by plane, float boat, or pack trails, and remains an unspoiled wilderness.
Situated in the Middle Rockies, the Middle Fork of the Salmon River is part of the Salmon/Snake/Columbia river complex. Lewis and Clark, in the Summer of 1805, probed the nearby Salmon River Mountains in the hope of finding most direct route to the west. The route proved too treacherous and they were forced to return the way they had come. To this day there are no public roads penetrating its vastness.
The original Middle Fork property was homesteaded by two trappers, Voller and McNerney, known as the Buckskin boys. Their two-story hand hewed cabin is still standing on the property and is available as a guest accommodation.
The original Middle Fork Lodge was built by the Tom McCall as a family residence and guest ranch. The McCall family were the first to tap the area’s natural hot springs as a source of heating making the ranch largely self-sufficient.
